Over sixty years ago, our dear friend Benjamin Bloom chaired the\u00a0committee of educators responsible for delivering\u00a0what we all know today as Bloom’s\u00a0Taxonomy (a bit rich naming it\u00a0after himself, but it does have a more catchy\u00a0ring than Krathwohl<\/a>‘s Taxonomy). As a key foundation to\u00a0many modern teaching philosophies,\u00a0learning methodologies and real-world board games<\/a>, Bloom’s Taxonomy gives a theoretical progression to help\u00a0classify learning objectives.<\/p>\n

While this theoretical model is the backbone for\u00a0many of our\u00a0education systems and learning games<\/a>, turning\u00a0the theory it\u00a0into real classroom tasks requires a more practical slant on the taxonomy. In an effort to turn a high level taxonomy into\u00a0meaningful classroom learning experiences a number of educators have translated each definition into a set of actionable Bloom’s Taxonomy verbs<\/strong>. The below chart visualizes each level of the taxonomy, offering verbs that can be used to traverse a wide range of thinking skills and provide hands-on ideas and inspiration for practical classroom\u00a0activities.<\/p>\n

Using Bloom’s Taxonomy<\/h3>\n

Bloom\u2019s verbs are quite a helpful tool in your instructional toolbox. Also known and thinking or power verbs, they are a wonderful resource in lesson planning, personalized learning and curriculum mapping.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Teachers may guide students in learning and applying specific thinking skills with the usage of Blooms Taxonomy verbs. They simply focus on using verbs that identify with a specific level. For example, the verb list will determine what the student remembers whereas words like judge, argue and assess may direct the student into higher levels of evaluating data and finding their own conclusion.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea is to have a solid foundation of knowledge and to build on it. <\/span>Although Blooms Taxonomy verbs are set out in a pyramid format,<\/span> it\u2019s not always as simple as building the pyramid from bottom to the top. A combination of d<\/span>ifferent thinking levels <\/span>is<\/span> often <\/span>represented in a lesson learned.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The same verbs may be used <\/span>at<\/span> various levels.<\/span> It doesn\u2019t mean the questions will be the same because the same verb is used. <\/span>These verbs help phrase what the objective <\/span>the teacher <\/span>wants to <\/span>measure. <\/span>Using the same taxonomy, t<\/span>he outcome of the question and the way the question is phrased <\/span>will<\/span> differ<\/span> for the various thinking categories<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These insightful verbs are measurable<\/span> and help <\/span>teachers create questions and assignments <\/span>that are quantifiable. T<\/span>he <\/span>verbs help avoid using verbs that don\u2019t lead to measuring and quantifying an outcome.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It may be a learning curve, but when these techniques<\/span> are used correctly, it becomes a powerful teaching tool. <\/span>Usage of these verbs aren\u2019t limited to assessing a student\u2019s knowledge and <\/span>their <\/span>understanding<\/span> of a subject<\/span>; it is <\/span>a <\/span>highly effective<\/span> tool<\/span> in mapping out <\/span>a<\/span> curriculum; <\/span>in <\/span>planning the required lessons for the curriculum<\/span>; and helping students in <\/span>personalizing and differentiating learning.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Working from the bottom of the pyramid to the top, the 6 levels are knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowledge<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

A student\u2019s knowledge is assessed by <\/span>asking questions to see what they\u2019ve remembered from the lesson. <\/span>Their <\/span>ability to recall knowledge<\/span> is tested <\/span>with multiple choice questions <\/span>or <\/span>by <\/span>ask<\/span>ing simply<\/span> what, where, and how questions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Verbs <\/span>example<\/span>s<\/span> used to phrase <\/span>questions to test what the student ha<\/span>s<\/span> previously learned<\/span> are:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

arrange, define, <\/span>describe, <\/span>duplicate, <\/span>identify, <\/span>label, list, <\/span>match, <\/span>memorize, name, order, recognize, relate, recall, repeat, reproduce, <\/span>and <\/span>state<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Comprehension<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Asking students to summarize, describe or discuss a topic helps determine their level of understanding of the lesson. <\/span>The student retrieving the knowledge and building new connections in their mind.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Examples of verbs<\/span> to demonstrate what the student<\/span> understands are<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

classify, <\/span>convert, defend, <\/span>describe, discuss, explain, express, <\/span>generalize, <\/span>identify, indicate, <\/span>infer, <\/span>locate, <\/span>paraphrase, predict, <\/span>recognize, report, restate, review, select, <\/span>and <\/span>translate<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Application<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

At this level<\/span>,<\/span> students apply what they\u2019ve learned and understood from the lesson<\/span> by following <\/span>a process<\/span>. A great way to test a student\u2019s thinking ability at <\/span>this<\/span> level is to require them to apply their understanding to real situations.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Useful appl<\/span>ication <\/span>taxonomy verb<\/span> examples<\/span> for <\/span>are:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

apply, choose, <\/span>compute, <\/span>demonstrate, <\/span>discover, <\/span>dramatize, employ, illustrate, interpret, <\/span>manipulate, <\/span>operate, practice, <\/span>prepare, <\/span>schedule, sketch, solve, use, <\/span>and <\/span>write<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Analysis<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The analysis level shifts from mere remember<\/span>ing<\/span>, understanding, and applying knowledge to analyzing a problem.<\/span> By using these lower level cognitive skills, students break down content and i<\/span>deas into simpler <\/span>concept<\/span> and evidence to support generalizations.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Examples of a<\/span>nalyzing <\/span>verbs<\/span> teachers may use are<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

analyze, appraise, <\/span>breakdown, <\/span>calculate, categorize, compare, contrast, criticize, differentiate, discriminate, distinguish, examine, experiment, <\/span>point out, <\/span>question, <\/span>select, separate, <\/span>and <\/span>test<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Synthesis<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Now students are at a level to predict and theorize about what they\u2019ve learned. <\/span>They compile information and ideas into new and alternative solutions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Creative verbs to define <\/span>these types of questions<\/span> are:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

arrange, assemble, collect, <\/span>comply, <\/span>compose, construct, create, design, develop, <\/span>explain, <\/span>formulate, manage, organize, plan, prepare, propose, <\/span>rearrange, rewrite, <\/span>set up, <\/span>synthesize, <\/span>and <\/span>write<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Evaluate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The highest level of Bloom<\/span>‘<\/span>s taxonomy model is to use what they\u2019ve learned, <\/span>to <\/span>evaluate, and <\/span>to <\/span>apply <\/span>their knowledge in finding <\/span>a conclusion <\/span>based on internal evidence or external criteria<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
