After watching my nine-year-old go through a BitsBox learning box one afternoon, I&#8217;m confident\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">this<\/span> is the way to entertain and teach programming at the same time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><div class=\"su-button-center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=cl&#038;mi=14287&#038;pw=226405&#038;ctc=reviewlink&#038;url=http%3A%2F%2Fsubscribe.bitsbox.com\" class=\"su-button su-button-style-soft su-button-wide\" style=\"color:#FFFFFF;background-color:#E74C3C;border-color:#b93d30;border-radius:12px;-moz-border-radius:12px;-webkit-border-radius:12px\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color:#FFFFFF;padding:0px 30px;font-size:22px;line-height:44px;border-color:#ef8277;border-radius:12px;-moz-border-radius:12px;-webkit-border-radius:12px;text-shadow:none;-moz-text-shadow:none;-webkit-text-shadow:none\"> Find Out More At BitsBox.com<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I&#8217;ll start off by telling you a little more about BitsBox, but scroll down if you want to hear more about our own hands-on experience with the lessons.<\/p>\n<h3>Who Would Like BitsBox?<\/h3>\n<p>While BitsBox is targeted at 6-14 year old children interested in computer programming, I think other children could benefit as well.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Children that are driven by success would enjoy this subscription. Students are set up to succeed, and the smaller projects allow them to get positive feedback early and often.\u00a0 That said, there is a &#8220;right&#8221; way to program &#8211; so there is some challenge in following the language syntax.\u00a0 This makes the victory &#8220;real&#8221; and not of a low value like many everyone-gets-a-trophy activities kids participate in today.<\/li>\n<li>Introverted children could benefit from the show-and-tell nature of sharing apps\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">they<\/span> created.\u00a0 I think this benefit could really snowball as a child gains more experience and confidence in their app-ability.<\/li>\n<li>Creative, storytelling-driven kids will love how quickly they can go from a blank canvas to a world they created.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Who Should Look Elsewhere?<\/h4>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think really young or upper-class high-school children would get as much out of BitsBox.\u00a0 Younger children probably won&#8217;t grasp the concepts, while older students will likely look at the stamps as generally being aimed at a younger audience.\u00a0 I&#8217;d also think children already programming in Java or Python wouldn&#8217;t stick with BitsBox longer term.\u00a0 They might enjoy how quickly they could create an app, but I&#8217;d expect them to lose interest over time.\u00a0 That&#8217;s just my opinion though &#8211; if you have a different experience please share it in the comments.<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for other STEM gift ideas, check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fractuslearning.com\/best-stem-science-tech-engineering-learning-toys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in-depth guide to STEM subscription boxes<\/a> for more ideas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-note\"  style=\"border-color:#1c3e7f;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#365899;border-color:#ffffff;color:#ffffff;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">Our Verdict: BitsBox is perfect for a child showing interest in programming, or who wonders how video games are made. While an average 6 or 7 year-old might need some help getting started, older children will be able to tackle the coding on their own. BitsBox apps are perfect to help get parent-child conversations going. They are also great opportunities for a child to showcase their creative work.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3>What is BitsBox?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"su-youtube su-u-responsive-media-yes\"><iframe width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jhoj42iWnpY?autohide=2&amp;autoplay=0&amp;mute=0&amp;controls=1&amp;fs=1&amp;loop=0&amp;modestbranding=0&amp;rel=1&amp;showinfo=1&amp;theme=dark&amp;wmode=&amp;playsinline=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture\" title=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>BitsBox is a subscription service that helps your child to learn how to code.\u00a0 While I have coding experience it&#8217;s not necessary. Neither you nor your child needs and previous experience in order to use BitsBox.\u00a0 The system is really simple:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Your child looks through the included material to pick out an app that interests them.\u00a0 They range from very simple three-line code to more advanced.<\/li>\n<li>After logging onto your BitsBox account on the website, your child types in the code and runs it.\u00a0 They can also make changes to customize it however they would like.\u00a0 As the system is progressive, you will likely find your child going back to old apps they have made and adding new features once they learn how to program that function.<\/li>\n<li>I think this step is key: the app is then available to run on any mobile device or web browser.\u00a0 Your child with be able to share their work with you, friends, anyone.\u00a0 So there&#8217;s a chance for you to play with what they made, and ask them questions about how and why they coded what they did.\u00a0 You can help them solidify in their head what they just learned by having them walk you through what the code does.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Monthly subscriptions include code lessons and a binder to store them in, a parental guide to that month&#8217;s lessons, and stickers and temporary tattoos.\u00a0 My review box didn&#8217;t have a parental guide but I didn&#8217;t even notice there was supposed to be one included &#8211; the lessons are pretty self-explanatory and easy to get going on.<\/p>\n<h3>Our Hands-on Experience With The BitsBox STEM Box<\/h3>\n<p>My child has shown an interest in programming in the past.\u00a0 \u00a0He&#8217;s used <a href=\"https:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scratch<\/a>\u00a0(a block based programming language) to create but generally lost interest after a short period of time.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t sure if it was because he got bored with programming in general or if it was just that style of programming.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=14287&amp;pw=226405&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fsubscribe.bitsbox.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-48905\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fractuslearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GOPR0386-360x270.jpg\" alt=\"A freshly-arrived BitsBox\" width=\"360\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fractuslearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GOPR0386-360x270.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.fractuslearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GOPR0386-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.fractuslearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GOPR0386-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a>So when BitsBox was kind enough to provide us with one free review copy of their programming-focused subscription, I knew I had the perfect guinea pig.\u00a0 I already knew about how long a programming session could hold his interest, so I was interested to see if his reaction to BitsBox would be any different.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m glad to report that he\u00a0<strong>loved<\/strong> using BitsBox.\u00a0 When I first explained to him he&#8217;d need to try it, he acted like he does with most things that cut into his Roblox gaming time &#8211; with some hostility.\u00a0 We compromised and I told him he&#8217;d only need to follow along for 30 minutes. If it wasn&#8217;t fun after that long he could stop.<\/p>\n<p>I was available to help if he ran into trouble, but I told him I wanted him to try to figure out how to use it on his own as much as possible.\u00a0 This didn&#8217;t need to turn this into a computer programming lecture (which frankly, BitsBox would be great for); it was important to see if BitsBox would hold his interest as he learned at his own pace.<\/p>\n<p>I figured he would at least enjoy playing with the system for a few minutes.\u00a0 The box kit contains large and small cards, along with some stickers and tattoos.\u00a0 All of these cards have workable apps on them.\u00a0 They start from 3 line bits of code that creates a lava planet with a monster that says &#8220;wooyah!&#8221; through the speakers on up to an entire mini game call Alien Blaster.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to later that evening. I eventually had to pull him away at the three hour mark because we had somewhere to go.\u00a0 This shocked me &#8211; he had a green light to play\u00a0<em>video games<\/em>\u00a0 instead.<\/p>\n<h3>BitsBox Inspires Creativity<\/h3>\n<p>What I did not anticipate was how quickly he was able to jump from simply reading and typing the code provided to creating his own features.\u00a0 Within a half hour, he started figuring out that he could add more characters (called &#8216;stamps&#8217;) to the screen by assigning them to variables and acting on them.\u00a0 Once that happened, the real fun began.<\/p>\n<p>Sean began to rotate through different characters, motions, actions and sounds at an amazing pace.\u00a0 I could see he was making up stories in his head like he does when he played with action figures.\u00a0 Now he was able to make those stories come to life on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>This was all happening using an type-based &#8220;dot&#8221; programming language.\u00a0 If you have any experience with Python,Java or even VB you&#8217;d be right at home reading BitsBox code.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t explain it to him, but he figured out through short examples that adding a .move() after a stamp&#8217;s variable would make the astronaut move around the screen.\u00a0 Changing the numbers in the parenthesis would change how or where the astronaut would go.<\/p>\n<p>The following video is a screen capture of him at work at about 2 hours into his learning experience.\u00a0 It shows what a 10 year-old can create using\u00a0 BitsBox the same day as opening up the box:<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-youtube su-u-responsive-media-yes\"><iframe width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xqiIGKKoKug?autohide=2&amp;autoplay=0&amp;mute=0&amp;controls=1&amp;fs=1&amp;loop=0&amp;modestbranding=0&amp;rel=1&amp;showinfo=1&amp;theme=dark&amp;wmode=&amp;playsinline=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture\" title=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>This is important because when he runs into &#8220;real&#8221; code someday, he&#8217;ll already have have experience seeing the style, and should easily grasp how it works.\u00a0 While I think &#8220;block-based&#8221; programming has it&#8217;s place, one downside is a child needs to make a jump from blocks to &#8220;real&#8221; programming style.<\/p>\n<p>Your child won&#8217;t have that issue using BitsBox to learn.<\/p>\n<h4>Will Your Child Get Bored Quickly?<\/h4>\n<p>One of the concerns I initially had before letting my son play with it was the shelf life of the system.\u00a0 I only had one module in front of me &#8211; I wondered just how far along could an average child would get before this might get boring.\u00a0 After watching my son interact and seeing how many commands there are built into the language, I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s a legitimate concern.
